Zombie beholder art11/28/2023 The only real concern I have is making sure the thing isn’t hovering too high that it makes it impossible for your melee fighters to hit. The only thing that doesn’t affect it is prone, which depending on the party may not ever come up. Lastly, it’s health is actually relatively low compared to the multi-resistant monsters of challenge rating 5. This means it will likely choose very poorly when it comes to picking targets of its eye rays and cone (using dex saves on the rogue, using anti-magic cone on a barbarian, etc). It’s dex makes initiative and saves very low and it’s intelligence makes it very stupid compared to its highly intelligent living version. You’d be surprised how much damage a party can deal against a monster with only one semi-deadly attack a turn. Not to mention the stronger ray doesn’t deal half damage on the save. Only half of these do damage as well, and they are some of the more common saves (con and dex). First and foremost, it can only cast a single eye ray per turn. That being said, there are things that make a zombie beholder much weaker than its living counterparts. If it was a relatively short dungeon leading to the encounter, it’s a bit more balanced. If this is a boss battle at the end of a long dungeon where players would have spent most of their abilities, then this would be a very challenging fight. “Fair” is very much based on the context.
